The Hook Up: 3-16-2011 Posted by Anna Pulley on March 16, 2011

Can you do a post about gay language for straight girls? I'm always afraid I'm going to say something dumb considering that in my hometown "gay" is synonymous with really dumb. Grrr. I don't have much of a measuring stick to work with. If you could include language that a well-intentioned bumpkin should avoid using, that’d be swell too.

PS: Is there a word for a girl-on-girl-crush, when the crusher is straight?

Anna says: Great question! And thank you for asking. Some straight women think being a queer gal simply means that we have 38 ways to spell wimmin, but there’s so much more to it than that! Below, I present to you the following lezicon*, a queer dictionary of sorts, with relevant examples, celebrities, and everyday usages that you can use to impress your new queer friends at the next folk festival and/or at the next Vagina Monologues production.

*Note of historical relevance: Gay terms obviously vary by time, region, and stereotypes. I can't get them all, nor do I mean to offend anyone with generalizations. Tongue is firmly in cheek here, but I encourage you to add your own terms in the comments.

Androgyny: Generically speaking, someone who exhibits both masculine or feminine gender traits. Might also go by: gender fluid, genderqueer, or David Bowie.

Tilda

Baby Dyke: A young lesbian, often fresh out of the closet, full of ideals and front row tickets to see Girlyman.

Beersexual: A gurl who will make out or sleep with another grrrl only while under the influence. Found often in reality television shows, in sororities, and in rare cases, Nick Lachey’s above-ground swimming pool.

Birkenstock-Blocking: When you are trying to hit on a wommon and another lesbian interferes.

Boi: Could mean any of the following, depending on context — a boyish lesbian, a soft butch (aka butch lite), a biological boy who hangs in queer circles, or a member of OutKast.

Breeder: A derogatory term for a straight person.

Bulldagger: A really butch woman.

Butch: A masculine-appearing queer wo'moon. Identifying traits may include: chain wallets, Vans, polo shirts with multiple popped collars, cargo pants, carabiners, motorcycle or sports attire. Often found by the pool table or dart board at bars, drinking Miller High Life, and looking hot, yet aloof. Butches are easy to spot since there is often about one butch per twenty femmes in any given bar. There’s even a song about it!

Cisgender: The opposite of transgender, meaning a person whose gender identity aligns their anatomical parts.

Femme: A feminine-appearing queer lady. Often found in line for the bathroom with four of her closest friends, drinking Miller Lite (so few calories!), wearing tapered pants, skirts, heeled footwear, or tight-fitting shirts. Femmes spend their time trying to seem as gay as possible so nearby butches will not mistake them for straight.

Friendcest: The not-altogether-queer-but-still-rampant phenomenon of sleeping with several people in your immediate circle of friends, their exes, their exes’ best friends, and half the people at the gay Starbucks you frequent. This always works out well, obviously.

friendcest

FTM: A female-to-male trans person.

Gayborhood: Enclaves usually in larger cities, where queers tend to live and/or congregate. Examples include: Andersonville in Chicago, Park Slope in Brooklyn, Capitol Hill in Seattle, Decatur, Georgia, Provincetown, Mass., The Castro in San Francisco, etc. You’ll know them because of the inordinate amount of rainbow flags adorning windows, doorways, and patios. There will probably be a co-op of some kind, a feminist bookstore, a sex toy shop, and lots of Subarus adorned with “Coexist” bumper stickers.

Goddess: The preferred deity of Gen X lesbians. Often used in an attempt to smash the patriarchal, colloquial use of God-as-man imagery. As in, “Are these vegan muffins gluten-free? Thank Goddess!”

Gold Star: A lesbian who has never had sexual relations with a man.

Hasbian: A lesbian who goes straight after many years and many Michican Womyn's Music Festivals, often surprising a great deal of her friends, and ruining several book clubs.

Hasbian

Heteroflexible: A mostly straight bisexual, who sometimes dips her diamonds in the rough from time to time.

Intersex: According to the Intersex Society of North America, “A person born with a reproductive or sexual anatomy that doesn’t seem to fit the typical definitions of female or male.” Sometimes referenced at potlucks by people who want to brag about reading Jeffrey EugenidesMiddlesex.

Lesbro: A straight man who gets along really well with lesbians and often joins their entourages. The classier version, according to a friend, is Lesbeau.

LGBTQQI: The queer community’s attempt to be as inclusive as possible. Will probably have several letters added to this by 2012. For the time, it stands for: Lesbian, Gay, Bi, Trans, Queer, Questioning (as in, you’re not sure, but you might be gay), and Intersex.

Lipstick Lesbian: Or High Femme. A really femmey woman.

LUG (Lesbian Until Graduation): A woman who is queer as all get out in college, wears Bikini Kill shirts.

Malesbian: Usually a well-meaning but somewhat creepy straight guy who thinks he is a lesbian because he listens to Ani DiFranco and went to a “Take Back the Night” rally once.

MTF: Male-to-female trans person.

The Muffia: Power lesbians! Business suit wearing, Bette from The L Word types, with blue tooths, and expensive coffee habits. These gals know how to strike a deal, tend to be controlling, and are good at making things happen.

Bette TLW S1

Multi-babular: Polyamorous.

Ned: A New England Dyke.

Partner: The term committed queer grrrls use to reference their significant others after they are tired of saying "girlfriend" or they are trying to prove to their families that their sexuality isn't a phase.

Pillow Princess: A woman who only likes to be pleased during sex, and does not reciprocate. Goes well with stone butches.

Predatory Bisexual: Anna Pulley.

Saysbian: A chick who says she's bi or lez, but only ever sleeps with men.

Scissoring: The preferred lesbian sex act according to the porn industry.

Stone Butch: A womyn who does not like to be touched sexually, and prefers to always be the giver.

Transgender/Transsexual: A person who desires to be and identifies as the opposite sex. Sometimes undergoes body modifications or takes hormones, but not always.

Tribadism/Tribbing: The hipper word for “Scissoring.” Also inspired the popular queer band in the ‘90s, Tribe 8.

Trisha/Trish/Trina: Another name for a femme.

Tina

Trysexual: A girl who will try anything sexually once. Also, Kim Cattrall in Sex and the City.

USA Gay: Someone who is really, obviously gay. Johnny Weir in a fur muff, ice skating to Lady Gaga gay. Can be shortened to just USGay.

Yestergay: Same definition as hasbian, but usually applies to gay men.

In terms of words you should avoid when talking to gay ladies, that’s a challenge because you never know what will offend someone. Sometimes, calling someone a “dyke” can be perceived as offensive, the same goes for carpet-eating sex metaphors, which I left out because you all know what that means. You can’t go wrong with queer usually, and if you’re unsure about a particular term, just ask. Queer wymmin love to educate. They also love to deconstruct the sociopolitical ramifications of everything. Flaxseed bread, abstinence education, vampires. hegemony, porn, Jillian Michaels’ abs, you name it. So don’t be shy. Ask away!

Lastly, I can’t think of a straight girl crush term off-hand, though I’m happy to invent some if you’d like to spread them around and then let me reap the glory. My contributions are “in-VADGE-uation” or “(s)traitor.” Anyone got something better?
