TIFF Review: A Night for Dying Tigers by Kim Voynar
The film feels, structurally, very much like a stage play, and Miles tends to keep his camera close to the action, creating a sense of intimacy between audience and story that very much draws the viewer into the psychological drama of the characters as it all plays out. This is a study in character and relationships, mostly; there's very little in the way of narrative arc, character arcs, or inappropriately melodramatic moments, even when the film hits its most emotional peak.

Her portrayal of Melanie balances vulnerability and fearsomeness with remarkable skill; during the opening credits, she projects joy, amusement, confusion and sadness in less than one minute, and without uttering a single word. "Jennifer was so great," Miles enthuses. "We met for coffee before she signed on, and she told me she wanted to play Melanie because she was terrified; the material scared her and she wanted to embrace that.

ok i missed the opening scene with jennifer and the headphones which is kinda too bad because i think i missed something crucial (aside from her beauty) and now will be wondering what she was listening to
but the one thing that came to my mind when this movie finished was bette porter's line in season six when she was talking to kit about "lesbian hotbed of interconnectiveness" (or something along that line) - you have to really pay attention to the dialogue and what's being said, the subliminal messages and how everyone is connected....i love these type of movies and it really blew my mind when this movie finished - i really want to watch it again and just analysis with someone/everyone.
anyways, i know you all have read reviews and synopsis of what it's about but just to recap here, jennifer's character (melanie) is a famous photographer who's married to john. the movie focuses on john's family primarily and the relationship between the three brothers and their adoptive sister karen (lauren lee smith).
focusing more on jennifer's character here (and spoilers for some of you ahead so if you don't want t know - stop reading now), melanie has been married to john for about 15 years (or was it 20 years). the family is having dinner before john goes to jail for 5 years. the movie doesn't reveal exactly what happened - it's kinda like a puzzle where you have to connect everything that you see/hear as it goes along but in the end john was going to jail for defending jules (melanie's best friend) when someone tried to kill her - they were having an affair and explain mostly why john and melanie's relationship is strained.
the dinner was interesting because of what was revealed about of the member present and like mentioned before - melanie's revelation was my favourite scene. i highly recommend for everyone to see it if it's showing at your local film festivals. also, after the film was shown, there was a Q&A with terry and one of the actor who played patrick along with the other crew and i have to say that terry is hilarious in person and i can see that humour on his film - dialogue wise anyways
